The short drive from Lorton up the valley to Buttermere village is truly magical. On misty days, Nick and Eloise look out for Harry Potter’s Hogwart’s castle on the far shores of Crummock Water, normally hidden to ‘muggle’ eyes.

There is a life-time of exploring, walking, pick-nicking and even sunbathing (yes-really) to be had in this valley. You will discover your own favourites but our family loves Rannerdale: A hidden valley of bluebells in spring and only a half hour scramble to the Knot. The views are amazing; the three lakes of Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater spread along the valley whilst you sit in the middle of a breath-taking mountain horseshoe.

We think it’s a secret worth sharing.
