Hospitality with a Big Heart – We’ve listened to you!

Newsletters are not usually this long, but we did feel this was worth mentioning, as it is your feedback that is so important to us. One of the loveliest and most enjoyable aspects of what we do is checking our feedback forms, reading our visitor’s book and Tripadvisor. The strongest message we get is that you love the warmth, friendliness and care of the team here. So this is absolutely at the centre of what we offer – hospitality with a big heart.

What we did realise over the last year, was that there was an occasional lack of consistency in standards SO we’ve spent some time looking hard at what we do and taken some action. We have now introduced a reception desk in the entrance hall which makes your arrival and departure smoother. We’ve also had a good look round Winder (as we always do in January) and smartened the place up, changing a few features and replacing things that needed to be. We’ve made sure that when we open the doors in February we’re ready to give you a really wonderful stay.

We aim to keep everything that is “Winderish” about what we offer including the genuine warmth and relaxed feel to the service, whilst making sure that we are just that little bit more professional and consistent. Bringing Sarah in as General Manager, along with a new chef and fuller a la carte menu, a bigger events team who also contribute to fabulous service in the restaurant means we’ve made big steps in the right direction. Please keep the feedback coming – it helps us to keep improving. A few photos of the team (well, of those I could get to sit still long enough!), and shortly we’ll have a page up on the website with more info.

What’s on locally?

In addition to fabulous Cockermouth Weekender in March, and the usual high quality productions from Theatre by the Lake, there is the Malcolm Wilson Rally on 2nd March – always spine tingling and full of excitement through Whinlatter, Greystoke and Grizedale forest! Well worth a visit, and as it starts in Cockermouth there’s always a great buzz in the area. We also have some fantastic rock & blues acts coming to The Saints Rooms, our baronial function venue in Cockermouth: Chantel McGregor, Aynsley Lister, Ryan McGarvey to name but a few. Special rates if you would like to enjoy the gigs then relax at Winder (from £75). For more info on the bands playing click here

And lastly my thoughts and photos from India!

Here are a couple more photos from India. So glad we don’t have this volume of sheets to launder at Winder! As well as Eloise’s fabulous dousing on an elephant, there are also a couple of pictures of Rosie being shown around the Dhavari slums right in the heart of Mumbai. An extraordinary and humbling experience. I guess the really positive thing that came out of it was that the guides are local slum kids hired by the company “Be Local” who pay them in order to help them take a step out of this poverty. It made a big impression on six year old Rosie, and I won’t forget any of the people we met, or the colours and chaos of that beautiful country!

So, how did it get me thinking about Winder? Well for a start, the “Be Local” connection. Even though it was a world away, and the support was for local kids in a much more vulnerable position, the idea of supporting local business and suppliers ties in totally with our beliefs at Winder Hall.

Spending a month in such a chaotic, colourful and challenging part of the world, made me think about what Winder Hall offers and why it is so important:

-          Time away from work and with friends and family is very special.  These are the memories that make us happy

-          A cup of tea, a slice of cake, somewhere cozy for you to put your feet up and great food to look forward to, is just as important whether you have spent the day exploring the Lake District fells or the back-streets of Mumbai.

-          The sights (smells!) and sounds of your holiday are just the canvas:  it’s the people you meet that brings your holiday alive and makes it special.

So, once again from the Lawlers and from the team at Winder, we hope you have a wonderful year, and that we can give you some unforgettable memories from your time at Winder Hall
